Dec 15, 2022 · here, we employ a national survey of 2021 u. s. Adults that asks about 15 psychological and political characteristics as well as beliefs in 39 different conspiracy theories. We propose that people possess a functionally integrated mental system to detect conspiracies that in all likelihood has been shaped in an ancestral human environment in which hostile coalitions—that is, conspiracies that truly existed—were a frequent cause of misery, death, and reproductive loss.
